I’m not usually a fan of contemporary works, least of all books involving things like Poker and gambling. However, Deeley won me over with this story. B Positive was a thrill ride from start to finish and I couldn’t help but cheer on Joe as he experienced his journey. The stakes were delightfully high and the characters three dimensional with realistic issues to work through. It was as if I was right there with the characters the whole time and I found myself wanting to find out what happens next and feeling that excitement from the competition.
I liked how things weren’t sugarcoated and how she gave the characters a sense of purpose and presence on the page. The story did lag a little bit in places, which pulled me out of the action at times, but for the most part, I was almost always immediately pulled back in so it’s a minor gripe at most.
I’ll admit I know precious little about Poker, but Deeley’s descriptions made the story approachable for people like me in a manner that wasn’t confusing or condescending. That and while Poker was a large part of the story in general, it wasn’t the sole focus. The characters faced real life or death decisions and worked through them in a way that was engaging and downright gripping. I read this story in an afternoon not thinking I would be that engaged by it, but I was.
The ending was a little rushed for me personally. I liked the realistic approach to it and I won’t spoil what happens here, read the story if you want to find out, but I felt it could have been a little more fleshed out. Not that it wasn’t good though, it was a satisfying ending to a great story and I’d definitely recommend this story to anyone with a love of Poker and characters facing tall odds, but I wanted more out of it. That said, I’d give this story four and a half stars!
